Twenty-first century society requires technologies that allow the use of naturalresources to be optimised following sustainability and circularity criteria. Theprogramme carries out research on the use of geological resources and on minimisingthe environmental impact of this use. Use is considered holistically, covering allenvironmental aspects, from the harvesting of raw materials to their disposal oncethey have become waste, and including all of the stages in their physicochemical andbiological transformation. Within this framework, the doctoral programme in NaturalResources and Environment builds on the research lines of the Resources and Smartand Sustainable Industries group and the TECNIO network’s Smart SustainableResources centre. The programme responds to the challenge of using naturalresources and urban, industrial and mining waste optimally from a comprehensive, multidisciplinary perspective. Given that resources are limited, it focuses on findingsolutions that minimise the production of waste or that use resources in line with theEuropean Union’s zero waste and circular economy directives.

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan

Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.

At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.

The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.

If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

Thesis abstract: This thesis proposes a novel approach for assessing road traffic noise in the United Kingdom, aiming to partially revise the existing methodology outlined in the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB). This assessment transcends the mandates of planning law and policy, encompassing obligations imposed by both common law and environmental legislation. The document re-examines the legal and regulatory stipulations that noise assessments must satisfy. It offers a thorough and lucid examination of the progression of noise legislation in England, tracing the history of rail, road, and aircraft noise from their inception to the present.Upon establishing the legal and regulatory prerequisites, the thesis conducts a critical analysis of the prevailing planning policies concerning noise, considering factors such as sustainability and good design principles. Subsequently, it scrutinises the methodology currently prescribed in the DMRB.The thesis then delves into cost-benefit analysis, exploring its application in evaluating road traffic noise and the implementation of noise abatement strategies. With this groundwork in place, it introduces a proposition to modify the existing DMRB methodology. The proposed amendments encompass four key aspects:1. Expanding the reporting of impacts to include both individual receptors and the wider community, thereby addressing the stipulations of common and environmental law.2. Shifting the focus from reporting ‘impacts’ to reporting ‘effects’.3. Elucidating the cost-benefit analysis involved in the adoption of noise reduction measures.4. Assigning a monetary value to noise effects, which could serve as an indicator of a project’s significance. This refined approach aims to enhance the framework for noise assessment, ensuring a more holistic and effective evaluation of road traffic noise implications.Furthermore, the research presented in this thesis investigates the factors that must be considered in any proposal that contemplates replacing the current road traffic noise prediction methodology (CRTN) with a new method based on the Harmonoise European research project. It specifically focuses on the decision-making process regarding the introduction of a noise mitigation measure (where a noise fence is taken as an example of one of such mitigation measures). This decision-making process should include not only the cost of the mitigation measure but also the cost of any compensation to be paid for the loss of value in an interest of land under the Land Compensation Act 1973.

Thesis abstract: The production of metallic glasses presents an opportunity for advancing materials science and engineering applications, offering a unique combination of mechanical characteristics that traditional materials struggle to achieve. Conventional materials often exhibit a trade-off between strength and toughness, but metallic glasses, with their non-crystalline structure, offer a promising solution to this challenge.Despite their potential, widespread adoption of metallic glasses has been impeded by challenges in the production of these materials. Achieving the necessary cooling rates for amorphization is a demanding task, as they are limited by the time-dependent process of heat transfer, which in turn limit the dimensions of the final product. However, these limitations can be overcome through the production of powder and their subsequent consolidation. In this sense, centrifugal atomization emerges as a promising technique for the production of metallic glasses. By subjecting molten metal to high centrifugal forces, this technique enables the generation of fine spherical droplets with cooling rates in the order of 102 to 105 K/s, promoting the formation of the desired non-crystalline structure. This doctoral thesis focuses on characterizing the centrifugal atomization equipment designed at the Fundació EURECAT, with the primary objective of enhancing the cooling rates of atomized particles for metallic glass powder production. To carry out this comprehensive study, a complete theoretical and experimental research of the centrifugal atomization process is required. Theoretical efforts involve refining numerical models to understand the thermal behavior of atomized particles, significantly advancing our comprehension of cooling kinetics in this process of atomization. These models are validated through experimental methods to determine their applicability range, ensuring their utility in future investigations. On the experimental front, a systematic study is conducted on the effects of disk rotation speed, melt superheat temperature, and gas composition on the cooling rate of Al-Cu alloys and Al-based metallic glass forming alloys. Furthermore, additional techniques are explored, such as introducing an external gas source into the conventional centrifugal atomization process to investigate the impact of gas flow on the cooling rate of atomized Cu powder. With the optimal adjustment of the atomization parameters, such as gas composition and disk speed, cooling rates of up to 105 K/s are achieved, with amorphous fractions of around 70% for particles smaller than 45 µm, and up to 50% in fractions of up to 125 µm in the Al-based metallic glass forming alloy of composition Al86Ni8Y4,5La1,5. The findings demonstrate that the centrifugal atomization process is well-suited for producing metallic glass powder tailored to meet the requirements of various industrial applications.By conducting this study, this thesis lays the groundwork for the advancement of metallic glass powder production via centrifugal atomization. Future perspectives include further exploration in other alloy systems, such Fe-based glass forming alloys, making use of the acquired knowledge to continue improving production processes and expanding the application possibilities of these innovative materials across various industries.

Thesis abstract: Tackling the widespread challenge of air pollution, particularly the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx), is critical to improving public health and environmental quality in Europe. Annually, air quality-related problems contribute to some premature deaths across Europe, underlining the urgent need for effective pollution control strategies. This PhD thesis explores innovative biotechnological processes for NOx removal, focusing on the potential of biological treatments as sustainable and cost-effective alternatives to conventional methods.Conducted at the Department of Mining, Industrial Engineering and ICT of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and the Eurecat Water, Air and Soil Technology Unit, this research is part of a collaborative effort to bridge the gap between academic studies and industrial applications. The thesis investigates the effectiveness of ionic liquids (ILs) and non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPs) as mass transfer vectors to enhance nitrogen oxide (NO) solubility and in turn improve NO bioavailability for microbial degradation. These vectors have the potential to revolutionize the design and operation of biological treatment systems of low water-soluble gases by improving their efficiency and scalability. The thesis systematically reviews existing NO control technologies to lay the groundwork for the introduction of bio-based alternatives. It delves into the selection and optimization of materials and methods, with emphasis on experimental designs that facilitate robust and reliable results. By improving mass transfer from the gas to the liquid phase, the research aims to address one of the main limitations faced by current biological treatments when treating hydrophobic gases such as NO.This research was supported by several academic and government grants, reflecting its importance and potential impact. The results are expected to open a door to the study of a new industrial technology, providing a solid scientific basis for further research into new alternatives for gas treatment.

Thesis abstract: The municipality of El Tambo is in the department of Nariño, Colombia, it is an integral part of the Andes Mountain Range, it belongs to the two most important geographical features of this in Colombia, “El Nudo de los Pastos” and “el Macizo Colombiano” These regions have the high biodiversity, in the second most megadiverse country in the world. The other hand, One of the most exploited mineral resources in Nariño is gold, through traditional small-scale production processes, mostly located in the Andean zone since pre-Columbian times and, therefore, have a mining and cultural heritage that can be exploited with sustainable methods. The aim of this Thesis was to develop a methodology for the design of a sustainable tourism route, "La Ruta del Oro", through the valuation of the geological, mining, biodiversity, historical and cultural heritage, first phase: Municipality of El Tambo. Its implementation will contribute to generate additional income, especially for women and young people who currently participate indirectly in the mining activity.A systemic and participatory approach was used, where: a) all macro variables are interrelated, b) several disciplines converged and c) the main social representants with knowledge of their territory were involved. The research was developed in 4 phases and 14 steps according to the specific objectives; these phases were: elaboration of the research outline; identification of the key macro-variables and their role; evaluation of the possible locations to integrate "The Gold Route" and proposal of stages and routes for its execution. The main results were:a. An original equation for the Total Valuation of Sites (VTs) based on four criteria and weighting factors, as follows: valuation that the local community gives to the candidate sites, called Preliminary Valuation (VPPs), Valuation of Characteristics and Attributes (VCAs), Valuation of the Visual Quality of the Landscape (VCPs) and Valuation of the Preferences of Potential Visitors from Pasto, capital of Nariño (VPs). The resulting equation is as follows:VTs = 28VPPs+28VCAs+28VCPs+16VPs.b. Fifteen sites were identified and evaluated, corresponding to natural, geological and mining heritage or historical and cultural heritage. With the results obtained, proposals for tours or routes were prepared in three stages. In the first stage, the six sites that obtained the highest scores are linked; among them: Cerro del Espada and Mina la Espada which are part of the thematic axis of the Route. The urban area where the life of the municipality is perceived, in this one is highlighted a) the Basilica where Jesus Nazareno is located b) the local market represents the rural life and c) the Victoriano Salas Arts Hall.c. Relatively new topics in the Latin American scientific context are being discussed in Colombia: the valuation of the landscape, geodiversity, geological heritage and mining heritage.Among the conclusions are:A methodological scheme was designed with a systemic and participatory approach that can be replicated in another territory or in another productive sector. The equation for the total assessment of the candidate sites is its own and original contribution, as is the methodological scheme.El Tambo (N) has some heritage: geological, mining, biodiverse, historical and cultural that deserves to be made known through a Thematic Route called “Golden Route.

Thesis abstract: Tropospheric ozone (O3) is a secondary gaseous photochemical pollutant with adverse effects on health, ecosystems, and materials, and it contributes to the greenhouse effect. 94% of the urban population in Europe is exposed to harmful levels of O3, especially in the south and Mediterranean countries like Spain, where regulatory values are systematically exceeded. The abatement of O3 concentrations is complex due to the nonlinear reactions between its key precursors - nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)- , and the influence of meteorology and atmospheric transport processes at various scales. The aim of this thesis is to enhance the understanding of O3 dynamics in Spain and contribute to the future National Ozone Plan aimed at reducing its levels. This research is based on the analysis of experimental air quality and meteorological data. A regionalization of the territory has been proposed according to the severity of O3 pollution. Critical zones (hotspots) are those with the highest O3 levels and should therefore be prioritized in implementing reduction policies. These include: the Madrid basin, the north of Barcelona (NoB), the closed basin of Puertollano, the interior of the Valencian Community, and the Guadalquivir basin (GB). In these hotspots, external contributions of O3 to Spain and Europe add to the considerable O3 production generated from intense local/regional precursor emissions, causing exceedances of regulatory values. Proper management of these emissions could significantly reduce O3 levels during episodes. Two hotspots have been studied in depth: (i) the GB, where some O3 contributions have been estimated. Controlling local/regional emissions could reduce O3 levels by up to ~50% during acute episodes. (ii) Barcelona - NoB axis, where three exceptional O3 episodes in the city have been analyzed, identifying their causes (mostly common): prior accumulation of O3, weekend effect, specific meteorological conditions, with Tramontana at altitude and very high temperatures, and multiregional convergence of air masses. The evolution of O3 levels has been analyzed in three phases: before (2008- 2019), during (2020- 2021), and after (2022- 2023) the COVID-19 pandemic, due to its impact on precursor emissions. Between 2008-2019, O3 levels in the hotspots showed divergent trends. In the Madrid basin, they increased generally due to meteorology, reduced NOx emissions from road traffic, and a slight increase in VOCs, in a VOC-limited O3 formation regime. In contrast, Seville recorded decreases in O3, attributed to an atypical urban O3 formation regime (more limited by NOx). Other hotspots showed no clear trends, due to slight variations in precursor emissions and the absence of meteorological variations. During the pandemic, O3 levels decreased widely across the country, especially on the Mediterranean littoral, where for the first time regulatory values were not exceeded, due to the unprecedented reduction in precursor emissions at various scales (local, regional, European, and hemispheric), and unfavorable meteorological conditions for O3 production/accumulation. During the post-pandemic period, O3 levels increased compared to the pandemic, although they generally did not reach pre-pandemic levels, despite multiple and intense heat waves conducive to O3. In all three periods, O3 levels increased in urban areas affected by traffic emissions, indicating various causes. The results suggest a long-term convergence between O3 levels in rural and urban environments. Additionally, they highlight the importance of analyzing O3 dynamics at the local/regional scale and applying differentiated management for the various hotspots.

Quality

The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
